On Orcas Island, the summer solstice is kind of a big deal.
In celebration of the longest day of the year, islanders dress up in all kinds
of wear, from flower fairy costumes to mud to belly dancers to Barbies. This
year was a particularly eclectic turnout, and the parade stretched along with a
variety of highly creative and celebratory costumes.

Mud and balloons along North Beach Road |
Coated with mud from the nearby beach, these two brought the
ocean to the streets of Eastsound.

One section of the music |
Music is always a big part of the parade, and this year did
not disappoint. Islanders drummed on buckets and blew through didgeridoos as
they strutted along.

The Barbies passed right in front of the Orcas Island Realty Office |
The Barbies were a new element to the traditional
characters. Peace-love-hippy Barbie, princess Barbie, beach Barbie, and luau
Barbie were all present in their original boxes

An event for all ages, the parade is an opportunity for many
to show off their talents in addition to their creative costumes.
