Stoplights? On Orcas Island?
June 12, 2015
What might have caused quite a backlash is, in fact, a
temporary installment to aid in road upkeep and safety. The stoplights currently in place on
Deer Harbor Road are the first of their kind seen on the island in many years by
locals, who take pride in the rural nature of the roads and highways on Orcas.
The scenic road from beautiful West Sound to Deer Harbor is
notoriously narrow and characterized by blind corners and cliffs. Thus, these stoplights
are essential for road repair and for the installation of a guard rail. They are also a
reminder of the beauty of the island, which is not yet marred by the neon
flashes of urban life.
