Fireworks

July 3rd, 2013

Which Orcas village will have better fireworks this year? That is the question: Deer Harbor tonight, the 3rd, or Eastsound tomorrow night, the bona fide 4th of July?

Some years, when nothing catches on fire that is, many viewers claim the Deer Harbor show to be more original and sometimes to last longer than the main festivities in town. People crowd onto boats in the marina and hang off the edges of the dock while a small band plays on the boardwalk and everyone mills about.

The Eastsound fireworks, most often viewed from the park in front of Indian Island, more commonly boast the big-boomers; the loud, obnoxious, awe-inspiring explosions that echo off the three sides of the enclosed bay area and seem to touch each bank as the sparks fade down. The band plays big, patriotic, horn-filled numbers on the lawn and tons of people crowd around for the big, showy celebration of the 4th.

Although both shows are small compared to any off-island extravaganza, together they create a great two-day celebration for the island folk and visitors.
