The Polar Bear Plunge
January 2nd, 2014
An icy, New Year tradition, the annual Polar Bear Plunge on Orcas Island is a popular way to greet the new year.
Locals gather at the marked-off swimming section at Cascade Lake, which although frigid, is still warmer than the Pacific Ocean this time of year. Everyone runs headlong together and dunks themselves in the freezing water for a fresh start and a way to cast off anything negative from the bygone year.
Afterwords, hot drinks are shared as shivering islanders wrap themselves in towels to get warm and share resolutions for the New Year. There are many dedicated individuals who have made this a lifetime tradition, coming for years to the lake for a new year awakening on January 1st!
